Adaptive Athletics

YRF's Adaptive Fitness and Sports Program offerings encourage veterans to get up off their couches, get together with other service members, and use fitness to heal, grow and have fun.

A nine-year war veteran named Danny Farrar created SOLDIERFIT, a unique and varied workout regime which combines functional fitness training with basic training exercises Farrar learned in the United States Military.

The Yellow Ribbon Fund has partnered with SOLDIERFIT to provide a weekly class in a private setting just for service members. During each class, Occupational and Physical Therapists from Walter Reed will be on site to monitor and help with the workouts.

MODERN ARMY COMBATIVES PROGRAM

Hosted by Ascend Institute of Martial Arts in Bethesda, this first-of-its-kind program aims to adapt the U.S. Army’s own combatives program for disabled soldiers.

Taught by Army-certified instructors with the help of Ascend staff members, occupational therapists and physical therapists, the program teaches quick, simple and effective techniques for fighting.

A second curriculum is in development for survivors of Military Sexual Trauma.

 Paralympic Games -- Athlete Sponsorship

The Paralympic Games is a major international multi-sport event for athletes with a wide range of physical and intellectual disabilities. There are currently twenty-two sports on the Summer Paralympic program and five sports in the Winter Paralympics program. Our own Jason Sturm, co-founder of our Taking Up Fitness or TUF Team is the inaugural paralymic bob-sled World Cup champion. The Yellow Ribbon Fund is sponsoring Jason as he prepares for the Pyeongchang Winter Games in 2018.
