Yellow Ribbon Fund Volunteer Program

The Yellow Ribbon Fund Volunteer Program carries out the mission of the Yellow Ribbon Fund by directly welcoming families of injured service members into our community.

These families come from all over the country and can stay from weeks to over a year. Often they need as much support as the injured service member. In addition to the stress of caring for their loved one, they have practical matters to consider: Where will they live? How can they afford it? How do they get around this city? While our volunteers don't spend their own money, the Yellow Ribbon Fund assists with many of these needs by providing hotel and apartment rooms, rental cars, and taxis.

Our volunteers assist family members with basic concerns such as getting their own prescriptions filled or locating the nearest grocery store. Or, they may be looking for some occasional company outside of the hospital community -- they might like to see a movie or go out to dinner. Our volunteers are here to say, "What can we do for you? How can we help?"

What volunteers can do to help is almost limitless. YRF volunteer Becky Perl leads trips to Hillwood, the magnificent home of the late Marjorie Merriweather Post, located ten minutes from Walter Reed, as well as the National Cathedral. Volunteers help with babysitting and shopping. Becky and her team also have put on three successful parties aimed at the sometimes-overlooked population who often stay at facilities located on the hospital grounds - the children. Trips to the zoo, parks and Washington monuments are also possibilities for children and parents alike.
